Your perfect trip to South Korea

Best time: May Currency: KRW (₩)

Daejeon has a reputation among Koreans as the ‘No Jam’ (No Fun) city. This is unfair. It is actually the ‘Slow Jam’ city. As the research and science capital of Korea (Korea’s Silicon Valley), it is planned, spacious, and filled with green parks and rivers. It lacks the frenetic stress of Seoul. People walk slower here. The drivers are nicer.

The absolute center of gravity in Daejeon is a bakery: Sung Sim Dang. It is not just a shop; it is a pilgrimage site. Listed in the Michelin Guide, it sells the famous ‘Fried Soboro’ (streusel bread) and has lines that wrap around the block. Locals are fiercely proud of it. If you see someone carrying a bag in Daejeon, there is a 90% chance it is a Sung Sim Dang bag.

Daejeon is also a city of hot springs (Yuseong) and the site of the 1993 Expo, leaving behind the retro-futuristic Expo Park and the Hanbit Tower. It is a city for relaxing, soaking your feet in a free outdoor foot bath, riding a bike along the Gapcheon river, and eating carbohydrates.

The perfect plan for Daejeon:

Day 1 Agenda

Theme: The Bakery & The Old Town

  • Afternoon: Sky Road. The shopping street with a giant LED ceiling. Visit the Daejeon Modern History Museum (Old Provincial Hall). It’s a beautiful 1930s building.
  • Evening: Daeheung-dong. The artsy district. Full of small cafes and galleries. Dinner: Durae Doochigi (spicy pork stew).

Day 2 Agenda

Theme: Science & Nature

  • Morning: Expo Science Park. See the Hanbit Tower. It looks like a spaceship. Cross the Expo Bridge.
  • Afternoon: Hanbat Arboretum. The largest man-made urban arboretum in Korea. It’s huge and peaceful. Rent a bike and ride along the Gapcheon River.
  • Evening: Shinsegae Art & Science. The massive new department store. The basement aquarium and the rooftop garden are great. Watch the fountain show at the Expo park.

Spring (April-May): Beautiful. The cherry blossoms at KAIST university are great.
Summer (June-Aug): Hot and humid.
Autumn (Sept-Nov): The river paths are full of cosmos flowers.
Winter (Dec-Feb): Cold. The Yuseong hot springs feel amazing.

Local Customs

  • Bakery Queue: The line at Sung Sim Dang moves fast. Don’t be intimidated. Grab a tray and be decisive.
  • Bike Paths: The ‘Tashu’ (public bike) system is free for the first hour. Use it.

History & Culture

Daejeon was a small village until the railway junction was built in 1905, making it a major transportation hub. In the 1970s, the government built the Daedeok Innopolis, moving major research institutes here to decentralize Seoul. It is the brain of Korea.

Getting Around & Safety

Being the center of Korea, Daejeon Station connects to everywhere. The KTX stops here.

  • Subway: Only one line, but it cuts through the main areas.
  • Bikes: The city is flat and has great river paths.

Info for Nomads

Very underrated. Cheap rent, central location, good transport. Not a huge expat community.

Workation Vibe

Speed: Fast. 100 Mbps.
Cafes: Coffee Interview (famous design cafe in the forest) and Cornerstone H.
