Your perfect trip to USA

Best time: April Currency: USD ($)

Dallas is big. Big hair, big steaks, big trucks, and big money. It is a city that gleams—the skyline is lined with neon LEDs that put on a light show every night. It sits on the flat North Texas prairie, a monument to capitalism and ambition. The air smells of ozone, expensive perfume, and smoked brisket. While Fort Worth (its neighbor) is Cowboys and Culture, Dallas is Glitz and Business.

But looking past the oil-money stereotypes, Dallas has a surprising depth. The Arts District is the largest contiguous urban arts district in the nation, filled with Pritzker Prize-winning architecture. Deep Ellum, the former blues district, is a gritty, mural-covered neighborhood of rock clubs and barbecue joints that feels miles away from the uptown country clubs. The shadow of JFK hangs over the city at Dealey Plaza—a site that is smaller and more eerie than you expect.

The food scene is aggressive. This is the birthplace of the Frozen Margarita (thanks, Mariano’s). Tex-Mex here is a religion—enchiladas smothered in chili con carne and yellow cheese. But there is also high-end steak (of course) and sophisticated global dining.

Dallas is polished. People dress up to go to the grocery store. It’s a city of air conditioning and valet parking, where the summer heat is treated as a personal affront. It’s flashy, friendly, and unapologetically Texan.

The perfect plan for Dallas:

1

Day 1 Agenda

Theme: History & Margaritas

  • Morning: Dealey Plaza / Sixth Floor Museum. It is chilling. Stand on the Grassy Knoll. The X on the street marks the spot. The museum is excellent and respectful.
  • Afternoon: Klyde Warren Park. A park built over a freeway. Food trucks line the edge. Visit the Dallas Museum of Art (Free general admission) right next door.
  • Evening: Margarita Mile. Go to Mariano’s Hacienda (where the frozen machine was invented) or Meso Maya. Order the Elote and a strong rita.
2

Day 2 Agenda

Theme: BBQ & Blues

  • Morning: Bishop Arts District. Cute, independent shops. Hipster vibe. Coffee at Wild Detectives (bookstore/bar).
  • Afternoon: Pecan Lodge (Deep Ellum). The brisket is legendary. The line is long. Lockhart Smokehouse is a great alternative where you don’t need a fork.
  • Evening: Deep Ellum. Walk the streets. See the Traveling Man robots. Live music at Adair’s Saloon (graffiti on walls, cheap beer, best burger) or The Bomb Factory.
3

Day 3 Agenda

Theme: Nature & Posh

  • Morning: Dallas Arboretum. It is on White Rock Lake. The gardens are manicured to perfection. In spring (Tulips) or fall (Pumpkins), it is world-class.
  • Afternoon: Highland Park Village. The first shopping center in America. It’s where the 1% shop. Window shop. Lunch at Mi Cocina (get the Mambo Taxi drink – limit 2).
  • Evening: Reunion Tower (The Ball). Go up for the view at night. The city lights are impressive.

Weather

Spring (March-May): Stormy but warm. Wildflowers. Highs 75-80°F.

Summer (June-Sept): Brutal. 100°F+ is standard. Concrete retains heat. You move from A/C to A/C.

Autumn (Oct-Nov): The State Fair of Texas (Oct). Weather is perfect. Highs 70s.

Winter (Dec-Feb): Unpredictable. usually mild (50s), but ice storms can paralyze the city.

Local Customs

1. The Wave: Drivers wave. Be polite.

2. State Fair: If you visit in October, you MUST go to the State Fair. Eat a corny dog. Take a picture with Big Tex.

3. Dress Code: Dallas dresses up. If going to dinner in Uptown/Highland Park, wear a collar/heels.

History & Culture

Started as a trading post in 1841. It boomed when the railroads crossed here (ensuring its dominance over other towns). It became a banking and insurance hub, then exploded with the East Texas oil boom in the 1930s. The assassination of JFK in 1963 branded the city as the “City of Hate” for decades, a stigma it worked hard to shed through business growth and cultural investment.

Getting Around & Safety

Car: Essential. It is a sprawling metroplex. Toll roads are everywhere (get a tag or pay by mail).

DART (Light Rail): Good for Downtown to Deep Ellum or Zoo, but middle-class locals rarely use it.

McKinney Ave Trolley: Free vintage trolley in Uptown. Cute but slow.

Info for Nomads

Okay. Very corporate. Good for networking, but car-centric culture makes serendipitous meetings hard.

Workation Vibe

Speed: 300 Mbps+.

Cafes: Magnolias Sous Le Pont (Uptown) – French vibes, good wifi. Ascension Coffee (Design District) – Power lunch spot with great coffee.

Nick & Sam’s for the scene (glitz, sushi, steak). Pappas Bros for the wine list and quality. Bob’s Steak & Chop House for the classic oversized glazed carrot.

No! Do not say that. Fort Worth is “Cowtown” (Stockyards, cowboys). Dallas is “Business.” They are 40 mins apart. Visit the Stockyards in FW if you want the western vibe.
