Your perfect trip to Spain

Best time: October Currency: EUR (€)

Salamanca is the “Golden City” (La Dorada). The sandstone used to build it contains iron that oxidizes, giving the entire city a warm, honey-colored glow, especially at sunset. It is a place of learning and debauchery. Home to the third oldest university in the world, the streets are filled with students, giving it a youthful, vibrant energy that contrasts with the 800-year-old classrooms.

The Plaza Mayor is the heart. It is arguably the most beautiful square in Spain. By day, it is a living room; by night, it is a concert hall where Tunas (university bands in medieval capes) sing for money and drinks. The air smells of old books and Hornazo (a meat pie).

Salamanca is mythical. You spend your time looking for symbols: the frog on the university facade, the astronaut on the cathedral door. It is compact, walkable, and fiercely alive at night. The nightlife here is legendary—bars stay open until dawn, fueled by cheap drinks and student energy.

To enjoy Salamanca, sit in the Plaza Mayor at midnight. The lights turn off (or dim), the noise settles, and the stones seem to radiate their own light.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the astronaut doing on the cathedral? +

It was added by a stonemason during the 1992 restoration. Tradition allows restorers to add a modern symbol. It is not an ancient prophecy.

Is it safe at night? +

Very. It’s a student town. Streets are full of people until 4 AM.

What is Hornazo? +

A heavy pie filled with pork loin, chorizo, and hard-boiled egg. It’s a calorie bomb. Buy it at any bakery.
